Taiwanese telecoms launch next-generation
Wi-Fi calling with no service charges

          According to the latest plans submitted to NCC by Taiwan Top3 Telecom Operators, Chunghwa Telecom (2412), Taiwan Mobile (3045) and Far EasTone (4904), the 3G network will be completely replaced in the second quarter of 2024 and will enter the next generation of high-quality Call VoLTE (Voice Over LTE) era. Starting from 2022/8/1, Taiwan telecom operators have successively announced the opening of VoLTE services with no monthly fee. VoLTE (Voice over LTE), also known as high-quality calling, converts traditional voice into network packets and provides voice telephony services through mobile data. High-quality calls with voice services transmitted over 4G networks can make the sound clearer and more three-dimensional.


     VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi, also known as Wi-Fi calling) is an application service extended by VoLTE. VoWiFi is a new generation of wireless mobile voice communication technology based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. It transmits voice packets through Wi-Fi wireless network. It is a function under VoLTE. After the VoLTE service is enabled, the two will automatically switch. It can improve the problem of poor reception of mobile network. If the user uses the telecommunications company’s 4G network to make calls, in places where the 4G signal is weak, as long as they are connected to the Wi-Fi network, they can continue the call.

     Both VoLTE and VoWiFi are based on the IMS (IP Multimedia System)-based voice call technology. The technical concepts used by the two are the same. The biggest difference lies in the “media”; VoWiFi uses Wi-Fi as an access point, but both will eventually access IMS, and the telecommunications operator will control this IP voice service.

     VoWiFi is still based on the mobile phone number to make and receive outbound and inbound local calls, international calls or mobile calls, and the pricing is calculated based on the telecommunications tariff plan that originally adapted by the mobile phone number. Through this service, users living or staying abroad can use Wi-Fi network to make calls, saving high international roaming call charges. And using VoWiFi, users do not need to download the APP at both ends, and directly use the phone book and dial pad in the phone, and the phone automatically makes and receives calls through the Wi-Fi network.

     In an enterprise Wi-Fi infrastructure, the limited spectrum needs to handle not only the carrier voice traffic, and other applications and collaboration services such as video streaming and web conferencing.      In view of the increasing dependence of enterprises on Wi-Fi networks and the increasing performance requirements, PRISM and its Taiwan’s agent Bluering selected several common Enterprise Wi-Fi APs on the market for stress testing. 

     The PRISM MI10 showed significantly better performance than other brand APs in the video streaming and voice calling test items in this test, and it is the most capable of providing the expected user experience level and can meet the service provider’s service quality assurance agreement for users (SLA) enterprise AP product. In addition, monitoring the data performance of the traffic also shows that the PRISM AP QOS effectively transmits the media packets preferentially and can use the traffic most effectively.

  CAP is the only upstream node, and all REs will only connect to CAP.
l   Daisy Chain Topology
       – CAP, as well as RE, can serve as upstream node
       – RE can either connect to CAP or another RE
l   Hybrid Mode
Any topology with a mix of STAR and Daisy chain is possible.
      -In the diagram below:
n   RE1 and RE3 are 1 hop away from CAP.
n   RE2 is 2 hops away from CAP.
n   RE4 is 3 hops away from CAP.
Each CAP (Central AP) can extend up to 8 RE (Range Extender) or extend up to 4 Hops in Prism Mesh Wi-Fi feature.
